Kerry Wood named Cubs' closer; team reacts accordingly

In a move sure to tempt fate, Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella today named three-time simulated Cy Yound Award winner Kerry "D.L." Wood as the team's closer heading into the 2008 season.

Manager Lou Piniella chose Wood over Bob Howry and Carlos Marmol because he values durability in his setup men and believes closing will put less stress on the right-hander's arm.

"He's thrown the ball exceedingly well all spring," Piniella said. "He's got experience, and he's earned it."

Wood worked out of the bullpen last year, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 22 appearances, and has looked strong this spring.

And just to prove to the world that he isn't skeered of any curses, Piniella also dropped this phrase on the masses, "There's no reason he can't pitch three days in a row."

I wouldn't stand too close to Lou in the dugout anytime soon, especially if you see some dark clouds on the horizon.

And the team's reaction to the news?
